The $5 Billion Sacrifice

Proof by Fire & The Bitcoin NFT: Art and finance intertwine in a radical gesture. We burned a historic Zimbabwe banknote to create an NFT of absolute rarity.

How do you give non-fungible (unique) value to a digital artwork that is inherently reproducible? By ensuring its physical double no longer exists. This is the concept of « Proof of Burn », the core act of this project.

The Physical Artwork: From Hyperinflation to Art

We selected a 5 billion dollar Zimbabwe note — a powerful symbol of hyperinflation and the failure of fiat currencies. Before incineration, the bill was transformed:

  • The original floral patterns were hand-painted in blue.
  • Nine Bitcoin logos were stamped on it, providing a direct contrast between worthless fiat and the guaranteed scarcity of cryptocurrency.

The Act of Destruction & Its Proof

The transformed bill was filmed while being burned. This act is the definitive proof that grants the NFT its unique value.

Filmed in front of the Eiffel Tower (a symbol of the historical financial past), the video features original Copyleft music composed by the artist. Its rhythm evokes the « Tragedy of the Commons », echoing the destruction of shared resources — in this case, the destruction of value through inflation.

The Last Witness: Fragment & NFT

Curiously, a tiny fragment of the bill survived, wedged inside a solid silver menu holder. This unburned residue becomes the final physical witness of the destroyed artwork.

The buyer of the NFT acquires the digital immortalization of the complete artwork, along with the cryptographic proof (the video) that the physical original was sacrificed. It is a rarity based not on existence, but on the verified absence of its physical counterpart.
