Artist’s Statement: Why « Bitcoin Eats Silver Pizza »?
The artwork’s title carries a dual significance, both historical and economic:
- Pizza Day: This refers to the historic purchase of two pizzas for 10,000 bitcoins in 2010. The artwork creates a dialogue between digital culture and materiality, depicting Bitcoin « devouring » former monetary symbols.
- The « Silver Flippening »: The title highlights a major historic shift: Bitcoin’s total market capitalisation has now surpassed that of the global silver market. By using genuine solid silver coins to compose the Bitcoin, the artist materialises this superiority of digital scarcity over physical scarcity.
Beneath the central figure of the artwork « BTC PIZ: Bitcoin Eats Silver Pizza », a mathematical rigour takes hold. The artist has used stainless steel « Épi » (seed) coins to engrave, in minimalist typography, the acronyms « BTC » and « PIZ ».
- An Unalterable Foundation: The use of stainless steel for these inscriptions ensures that the « recovery words » of this artwork are protected against the erosion of time, much like the « BTC » of the Bitcoin protocol.
